Reporting into the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and conferring directly with the Policy and Advocacy team, the Policy & Advocacy Communications Specialist will play a vital role in developing communications strategies, crafting content, and executing multi-channel campaigns to drive visibility and support for Action Agenda priorities. The Specialist will be responsible for reaching various audiences, including existing Mass Audubon members and supporters, and new audiences across the state.
This Policy & Advocacy Communications Specialist will work closely with the Policy and Advocacy team as well as a team of marketing and communications professionals who are collectively responsible for leading organization-wide marketing strategy, implementing integrated marketing campaigns, and promoting various programs and initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Work with marketing and policy teams to develop organization-wide strategy that will build awareness of and support for Action Agenda policy priorities • Craft compelling content via presentations, videos, and other formats to tell the story of Mass Audubon’s policy and advocacy work and raise support for these priorities • Develop the communications and project manage the effort to inspire and mobilize broad audiences, including Mass Audubon’s Climate Champions, around specific policy and advocacy calls to action to fight climate change • Working with channel-specific experts on the marketing and communications team, weave policy and advocacy content into Mass Audubon social media, blogs, newsletters, email, and other constituent communications • Identify opportunities to tie policy and advocacy priorities to priorities across conservation science, ecological restoration, land conservation, environmental education, and other teams. Tell the story of how these priorities are interconnected and complement each other. • Work with diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice team to amplify existing environmental justice community priorities that intersect with Action Agenda, and more generally, to ensure all policy and advocacy communications are inclusive and demonstrate cultural humility • Collaborate with and train Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary and development teams to communicate Action Agenda priorities with visitors and program participants in a consistent and inspiring way. Ensure consistent adoption of these practices across the sanctuary system and fundraising teams. • Support outreach by producing and distributing materials, proposing and executing creative outreach tactics, and coordinating logistics for various events, including festivals, climate summits, fundraisers, and career fairs • Keep abreast of the latest policy news on climate, conservation, biodiversity, and equitable access to nature, and lead rapid response communications efforts as appropriate • Manage internal climate and policy communications with staff • Perform other duties as needed

• At least three years of experience working in advocacy communications or related field • Experience in creating written, audio, and visual content across various communications channels • Ability to write for a variety of audiences, including the media, current supporters, new audiences, and employees • Knowledge of climate, clean energy, land and water conservation, or related fields preferred • Flexibility and ability to respond to rapidly changing priorities and meet deadlines as developments in the broader climate landscape take place • Ability to manage several deadline-driven projects simultaneously • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively across teams, while also driving toward collective impact • Ability to relate to and work with a diverse range of people and exercise cultural humility and inclusion, and commitment to self-education about social justice (we provide ongoing training) • Understanding of and commitment to Mass Audubon’s mission and Action Agenda • Interest in environmental issues, equitable access to nature, and conservation (we provide ongoing learning opportunities) • Strong attention to detail • Willingness to attend events on weekends or in the evenings • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within Massachusetts. We provide vehicles as required for work-related site visits and events. • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field (e.g., public policy, political science, environmental or natural science) • Experience with political and policy advocacy at the state and local levels is a plus • Basic proficiency with graphic design tools, particularly Adobe InDesign, for light editing, is a plus • Spanish and/or other language skills are a plus
Compensation & Benefits
This position’s salary range is $57,000-$62,000. Actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position, though flexible hours and work locations may be negotiated.
Other Requirements: Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
COVID-19 Considerations: Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
