Trust for Public Land seeks a qualified intern to assist with and contribute to the Connecticut and New York offices’ fundraising and program related efforts. The position will be 30-35 hours/week earning minimum wage. The internship spans a range of responsibilities in the Philanthropy Department including managing and cultivating relationships with donors, contributing to research projects, and coordinating with staff and volunteers. The intern position will be focused on assisting the Associate Director of Philanthropy; Director of Philanthropy, Mid-Atlantic; and Vice-President, Mid-Atlantic and Connecticut State Director.

The internship will run from January-March
2024.


Duties:
  • 25% Program support:
  • Assist parks, trails, and land protection staff with creation of materials about existing and potential projects, such as project summaries, slide decks, website language, etc.
  • Attend staff meetings and site visits, support program leadership as needed.
  • Accompany parks, trails, and land protection staff to project- and program-related events, community meetings, etc., and assist with preparation and followup as needed such as logistics planning and notetaking.
  • Conduct research on potential projects and strategic implementation of TPL’s mission as directed by project/program staff and state director.
  • 75% Philanthropy support:
  • Donor Prospecting and Qualification: Spearhead research and identification of new donors in specific regions via online sources to identify individuals with an interest in land protection, parks, trails, or schoolyards
    • Donor Stewardship: thank yous, notes and project updates, assembling materials and correspondence, drafting reports and proposals, creating donor appeals.
    • Program and Operations Support
Learning Objectives:
  • Develop an understanding of TPL’s programs and interest in its mission

  • Gain experience in nonprofit philanthropy including best practices, qualification, stewardship, and cultivation
  • Learn how philanthropy supports mission-based operations and intersects with finance and the financial health of the organization
  • Build and maintain relationships with TPL colleagues, partners, and volunteers
Skills:
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to spearhead research projects and deliver clear and actionable reports
  • Professional and advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work part of a team and independently
  • Adaptable, flexible, and open to projects with a desire to learn
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for e-mail, document, and spreadsheet creation/management
  • Advanced experience with PPT and Excel a plus
  • Discretion when dealing with sensitive issues and information
  • Ability to represent TPL in a professional manner
