Working from more than 30 offices nationwide, Trust for Public Land’s 370 employees help communities raise funds, conduct research and planning, acquire, and protect land, and design and renovate parks, playgrounds, trails, and gardens.

The People and Culture team is looking to add HR Business Partner capacity to support organization-wide development activities. This opportunity is ideally suited to an experienced HR professional who enjoys the day-to-day tasks of HR like employee relations and recruitment and has a passion for process improvement and organizational development efforts. The ideal candidate will possess these skills coupled with the desire to work with a talented, strong, and passionate HR team.

This position is remote and can be located anywhere within a commutable distance of a TPL Office. A West Coast or Mountain West location is ideal (San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Bozeman, etc.).

HR Business Partner Duties- 50%

  • Engage leaders and develop strong relationships with key departments to understand the needs of the organization and help shape the approach required to succeed through strategic partnerships.

  • For assigned departments, provides client support to leaders on workforce planning, helping to resolve employee relations concerns, and providing guidance in resolving human resources related matters. Advocates on behalf of staff as needed.

  • For assigned departments, provides support to supervisors and staff via coaching and action planning on general management concerns – including performance management, the annual review process, salary decisions, supervisory changes, etc.

  • Assist with compensation-related matters such as pricing of new roles, job changes, promotions.

  • Guide the assigned organizational area through succession planning activities to promote development.

  • In partnership with our Senior Talent Acquisition Partner, leads assigned full-cycle recruitment efforts for assigned departments. Responsible for a hands-on approach to screening and interviewing candidates, interview logistics management, interview question creation, reference checking, and job offers. Implements advanced sourcing strategies to identify and reach out to qualified candidates to support TPL’s diversity recruitment efforts.

  • Provide hands on employee relations assistance including mediation, performance improvement guidance, staff support and offer solutions to human resources matters.

Organizational Development Support Duties- 50%

  • Supports departmental process improvement efforts including but not limited to researching best practices, convening and facilitating cross-functional work groups, documentation of policies and practices, general project management, and implementation. For example, providing project management for the re-design and implementation of revised grading and salary structure and associated compensation philosophy for the organization.

  • Work with other organizational support functions (IT, Legal, Finance) to develop efficient processes and tools to support the HR function.

  • In relationship with TPL’s Professional Employer Organization, participate in regular meetings and provide support in areas such a leaves of absence, training, compliance and reporting.

  • Supports efforts to enhance our employer brand with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion emphasis. Keeps close tabs on best practices in the field and ensures that our employer marketing efforts (tpl.org website, Glassdoor and LinkedIn accounts, job postings etc.) reflect those best practices.

  • Support Internal Communications function. Works with appropriate stakeholders on relevant internal communications efforts (drafting blogs, writing talking points for directors, outreach to staff for stories, editing documents, etc.). Supports efforts to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of TPL’s intranet.

  • Support staff engagement and morale initiatives. This may include the implementation and management of engagement and pulse surveys, the establishment of dashboards or other reports, project management of action plans, and follow-up as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a professional human resources role is required.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; an HR certificate is ideal.

  • Experience with employee transitions (hiring, terminations, promotions, leaves of absence) is required.

  • Experience leading or supporting projects and efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion required.

  • Experience in recruiting experience is required.

  • Experience working with a PEO is ideal.

  • Experience in a large, matrix organization is ideal.

  • Experience with process improvement or project management is ideal.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational abilities, attention to detail, promptness, and dependability.

  • Able to work with a high degree of self-direction and flexibility, especially with respect to taking initiative, prioritizing multiple tasks, and using excellent judgment to resolve problems.

  • Able to provide information and guidance to other employees in a compassionate, discreet way.

  • Willingness to travel when offices reopen.


As a full-time employee, you will be eligible for The Trust for Public Land’s comprehensive benefits program which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, sick and holidays, and a 403(b)-retirement plan, currently with up to a 7% company match. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position is $95,000-$120,000.
